  4.     DIED. Donald Barthelme, 58, innovative journalist and
  5. fiction writer who helped revive the popularity of the short
  6. story during the 1960s; of cancer; in Houston. Specializing in
  7. surreal, collage-like pieces that frequently appeared in the New
  8. Yorker, Barthelme published eight short-story collections (among
  9. them, Come Back, Dr. Caligari and City Life), three novels, a
  10. book of parodies and a children's book, The Slightly Irregular
  11. Fire Engine, for which he received a National Book Award in
  12. 1972. A fourth novel, The King, is due to be released next year.
